Found Termites in Your House? 5 Critical Dos and Don’ts to Save Your Property

Spotting termites in the house is every homeowner’s nightmare. Whether you see a mud trail climbing your wall, or a pile of tiny wings on the windowsill, the panic is real.

Your first instinct might be to grab a can of insect spray and attack them. Please stop.

As pest control experts led by a certified Entomologist, we see this mistake happen every day. Dealing with termites incorrectly can actually make the infestation worse, causing them to spread from your kitchen to your roof trusses.

Before you take any action, read this critical guide on how to handle a termite discovery effectively.

First: Know Your Enemy (It’s Not Always the Same)

Not all termites are the same. In Johor Bahru, we primarily deal with two types, and they require very different treatments.

  1. Subterranean Termites: These live in the soil underground. They build mud tubes (tunnels) to travel up into your home to eat wood. They are the most destructive and require colony elimination.
  2. Drywood Termites: These live inside the piece of wood itself (like an antique cabinet or a door frame). They don’t need soil. You will often see piles of tiny droppings that look like sand or sawdust.

Identifying which one you have is a job for a trained entomologist.

The 3 Critical DON’TS

1. DON’T Spray Aerosol (or Pour Diesel/Kerosene)

This is the biggest mistake you can make. Most shop-bought insect sprays are “repellents.” When you spray a mud tube, you might kill the 50 termites you see, but the thousands behind them will panic.

Because they sense danger, they will retreat and cut off that tunnel. They will then tunnel via a different route—often moving deeper into your walls or up to the ceiling where you can’t see them. By spraying, you are just pushing the problem to a harder-to-reach area.

2. DON’T Panic and Move Furniture

If you pull a cupboard away from the wall or rip off a skirting board to check the damage, you break their “highway.” For a termite treatment to be successful (especially baiting), we need the termites to remain active and calm. We want them to continue using that mud trail so we can feed them the bait. If you disturb them, they may abandon the site, making it much harder for us to kill the colony later.

3. DON’T Trust TikTok or Shopee DIY Hacks

We often see videos of “magic powders” or “termite sprays” online. Be very careful.

  • The Issue: Many of these products are just general insecticides. They do not have the “transfer effect” needed to kill the Queen.
  • The Risk: Failing to kill the Queen means the colony keeps growing. By the time you realise the DIY product didn’t work, the termites may have eaten through your parquet flooring or door frames.

The 2 Critical DOS

1. DO Take Clear Photos

Before you back away, take a few good photos or a video of the infestation.

  • Get a close-up of the insect if possible.
  • Take a wide shot showing where in the house it is (e.g., “skirting board near the kitchen door”).
  • Send these to us. It helps our team prepare the right tools for your inspection.

2. DO Call a Termite Specialist Immediately
